We can’t do something we want because of a law, so we blame the lawmakers. We can’t get into a certain school, so we blame the university’s board of admissions. We are tired, so we blame the neighbor’s dog for keeping us awake all night.In the job search, there’s a lot of blame to go around. We can’t get a  job, so we blame the  human resources manager, the  recruiter, the  hiring manager, the resume writer or the economy for being enemies of the unemployed.Understandably, there is a lot of frustration right now, and job search can be a soul-battering experience. At the end of the day, though, blame is a dangerous game. While there is certainly plenty of finger-pointing to go around, blame often leads to self-defeating behaviors. Those include:1. Anger and Bad Attitude.  These attitudes exude in email and in-person communications with poten tial job search influencers and interviewers. That chip on your shoulder is not appealing. Here are a few quick methods. 1. Brush Up on Your Looks You dont need to look like Tom Cruise to be successful in business, but it certainly helps. Talking lower and projecting your voice will make sure that people hear you and lend what youre saying more gravitas. Practice projecting and maintain a good stance when you talk this later point will also make you look more confident in itself. A basic tip when talking is to try talking slowly. This way you will appear calm and collected, and your audience will rate you as more intelligent too.   Just make sure you dont over do it, speaking unreasonably slow will have the opposite effect and make you look like a dim-wit. 4. Use Names Often Remembering and using names is a great way to win friends. This is because we are programmed to respond to our names and we tend to feel good when we hear them. If you are talking to someone and you use their name a lot, you will improve the way they feel about themselves and they will associate that feeling with you. Furthermore, using names is very direct and personal which will make people take more notice of you. 5. Make the Last Touch In dating using little touches is a great way to create a spark, but it can also be useful by making you seem more confident and dominant. In any encounter, the person who get the last touch in will generally be considered the more confident, so next time youve finished in a business meeting with a colleague, try giving them a friendly pat on the back as they leave. Making the choice between obtaining a university degree and plunging straight into employment can also be difficult task but obtaining a qualification may give you an edge during that job hunt. How to figure out your skills - To thine own self be true. Its more than just a line from Shakespeare! Wouldnt it be nice if everyone who worked had the luxury of spending their work hours doing something that they enjoyed and was true to their values and skills? If you are considering a new career, have you done any thinking about how that career intersects with who you are (or want to be)? Focusing your your values is one way to help direct your search.   Check out the University of Minnesotas Values Inventory to get you thinking about your values and what you really want in terms of work. Another strategy is to focus on skills.   So many job seekers cant really identify what they have to offer in the way of skills.   This is a real problem when it comes to the self-marketing, self-selling and interviewing aspects of the job search.   Ive said it before:   If you dont know what you have to offer, who does? There are many ways to approach figuring out your skills.   There is a basic one that I advise my clients to consider: look at a skills list.   Highlight all of the skills youve EVER used or could remotely be related to you.   Then, go back and check off the skills that really resonate and feel like you.   This is a basic, not time consuming and free way to get you thinking about   your skills. Another idea look at job descriptions that interest you. Highlight the parts that you know you are qualified to do. If most of the job is highlighted, you will have an idea of a direction you may want to go with your career. Another suggestion is to use an on-line skills profiler tool.   This instrument   allows you to identify and match skills used in a variety of different jobs with specific occupations.   You can search by skills or start with occupations.   This tool may give you some new ways of thinking about how you can use your transferable skills. Personality and occupational tests are tools to help focus your plans.   John Hollands Occupational Test functions on the belief that people who have similar interests may prefer the same types of work environments.   It aims to categorize your interests, abilities and personality into themes that may then be grouped to target careers.   This is one of many personality driven assessments available that may help focus your goals. Another tool to explore is the Myers-Briggs personality test. This is a free, limited version, but every time I take it, I wind up with the same result as the full-blown test I took in graduate school, so it cant be too bad! While taking a lot of skills inventories on your own is not an ideal way to decide on a next step, you may learn a thing or two, or be compelled to seek coaching.
